Message 38 : Advices (CryHavoc) Written on Thu Apr 4 17:19:42 1996 Welcome newcomers:-) For those of you who are venturing into this realm for the first time, especially if you are coming from another realm, this note will be most beneficial to you. First, Mume has an extensive help file on commands, revised (and in many places written) by Ariakas. Type "help" for a list of covered topics, although many more are included. Thus you could "help guild" if you wish. The murder of innocent and good creatures is not tolerated in Arda. This includes those beings that lack the adventuresome spirit. Do not expect such actions to go unpunished. Depending on your class, there is most probably a post, written by experienced and knowlegeable players, that will aid you in your journeys. Some will be on the Common board of the city of your choice, and some will be on the Guild board of the guild of your choice. Take heed, as these players have learned much from their journeys and wish to alleviate your hardships. Playerkilling is allowed, although those that make a habit of it without justification will most likely end up on Sauron's list (not an agreeable fate). Also, there are three races, Orcs, Trolls, and Black Numenoreans that will attack you on sight. You cannot communicate with these players via shout, tell, narrate or sing. May Eru guide you in your adventures, and may your heart always remain pure. Ariathalas Rinlasse, Elven Ranger of old. Message 39 : Help Me!, What do i do? (CryHavoc) Written on Thu Apr 4 17:20:18 1996 Welcome to MUME: Is this your first time on a mud? no problem, it may seem overwhelming at first, but it will become clear with time. This post will give you some of the essential techinical-information necessary to survive in this world of Middle-Earth. 1. When you leave this room, you will be immersed in the culture of MUME. This can be overwhelming. If things are moving too quick for you and your screen is scrolling with people narrating and singing, type: "listen none" This will make you filter out the constant chatter of MUME. If you want to return to the chatter, type: "listen all" 2. One of the first things you should do is type: "who god" Hopefully, one will be visible. If so, politely ask the god for a newbie kit, something like: "tell staer newbie kit please". You are only given one newbie kit per player, but it will give you some of the essentials for exploring and living in the world of Arda. This includes clothes, weapons, food, water, a light source and a town map. 3. Type "wear all" after receiving your newbie kit and you will "wear" all of the equipment given to you in the newbie kit. Thus, you will hold your torch, wear the clothes and wield a weapon. It is possible that you will be told that some of the clothes do not fit you. In that case you will need to use the "mend" command in town (type "help mend"). 4. Type "who istari" to list the istari playing. These people are sworn to help you. To find out more information about them you can, of course, type "help istari". 5. From this point, type: "help newbie". This will provide you with some additional information. Good luck in your travels, Staer Message 40 : Game rules (CryHavoc) Written on Thu Apr 4 17:20:42 1996 In order to favour role-playing, and to make MUME more fun for all its players, a set of rules has been written. The most important rule is - do not cheat. We are here to enjoy ourselves, and it is not fun to "win" a rigged game. In the eyes of MUME management, the worst forms of cheating are multiplaying, banking and exchange of information between Sauron's minions (orcs, trolls and black numenoreans) and the other peoples of Arda. To clarify what these terms mean, you should type: RULES BANKING RULES INTERRACE RULES MULTIPLAYING Typing RULES by itself will give you the index of the current game rules. Please read all the rules files soon, since ignorance will not be accepted as an excuse. The command to read about the subject XYZ is "rules XYZ", of course. Fror of Erebor Message 41 : About the Towns of Middle-Earth (Petrel) Written on Fri Apr 19 21:35:42 1996 Here is some information about the towns of Middle-Earth, which may be useful to you. The Shire: This is the normal starting-place for hobbits. It is a very peaceful land; sturdy Bounders keep evil orcs away except under unusual circumstances. The Shire is a collection of several hobbit villages. To find the shop or the guildmaster you are looking for may take a little walking, but there are very few dangerous beasts to be found in the Shire (only at the southern and western edges). If you type MAP, the Shire is to be found westward of the letter B (Bree) at the center of the map. It extends for about 120 miles, from the east bank of the Brandywine westward to the village of Michel Delving. The GreyHavens: This is the normal starting-place for elves and half-elves. It is a very peaceful seaport town; the magic of Cirdan, its wise patriarch, keeps out all evil beings. The guards are bold and strong, and swift to attack evil people and punish evil acts! The Havens occupies the north and south banks of the Gulf of Lhun, which divides it in two parts: the Forlond (to the north) and the Harlond (to the south). Each part has its own inn, shops, and guilds. A ferry travels between them. Immediately outside the eastern gate of the Havens is a peaceful agricultural area. About 20 miles past the gate, one begins to see boar, wolves, and other game. The BlueMountains: This is the normal starting-place for dwarves. It is found at the northwestern corner of the mapped world. Dwarves are good, but private and secretive people; it will be rare to see people of other races there. These caves, ruled by King Thorin II, are almost entirely underground. Outside the caves is a mountainous landscape, which becomes wilder as one travels toward the east. Fortunately dwarves are fierce fighters! Fornost: This is a normal starting-place for humans. It is a walled city in north central Eriador. Formerly the capital of Arnor, it was destroyed in battle with the witch-king of Angmar nearly a thousand years ago, and even after the power of Angmar was destroyed, the city was not rebuilt. It lay in ruins for hundreds of years, but just recently, the Dunedain - the human rangers who guard the north against evil - have recolonized it. The eastern part of Fornost contains an Inn, shops, and excellent guilds for the teaching of warrior and ranger skills. The western part of the city is very dangerous for inexperienced people! There are some dark forests to the south of the city which can also be dangerous. Bree: This is a town of hobbits and humans, found in the central part of Eriador. It is an ancient town, located at the crossing of two old and important roads. There has been little in the way of commerce through Bree in recent centuries, though, and the people are somewhat rustic in their ways. There are shops, guilds, and a well-known inn. To the northwest of Bree, and nearby it to the south, are a mixture of farmland and relatively peaceful plains. To the southwest of Bree, further south along the Greenway, and in the Chetwood east of Bree the fauna are more dangerous. The Midgewater Marshes east of the Chetwood are not for the inexperienced. In recent years, Bree has become less peaceful because of its location on the border between east and west, good and evil, the civilized and the wild. Evil orcs and sorcerers, sometimes accompanied by trolls, have been known to raid the town and its surroundings, especially in the long nights of winter. Some people who do not want to face such menaces travel west into the peaceful Shire, which is much safer. Rivendell: This is a haven of good surrounded by the wild and evil things of the east. Elrond Halfelven rules wisely there, with his household; there are shops, a resting-place, and wise guildmasters. Evil people are not welcome there! The only entrance from outside is across a ford at a location which is governed by Elrond's magic powers! However, hunting and travel anywhere near Rivendell is dangerous, and only the bold, the strong, or the rash will go there. Furthermore, in wintertime Elrond's control over the ford is less, and the haven is not as safe. Tharbad: This is a city in the south of Eriador, located at the ancient ford of the Glanduin river. It is a human city, which at present is a haunt of bandits, thieves, and assassins! It is dangerous even for inexperienced thieves; other inexperienced people will find the going very difficult indeed. Message 44 : Welcome to Arda! (Petrel) Written on Mon Apr 29 23:07:01 1996 Welcome to Arda! These are the Halls of Mandos, where the souls of new inhabitants - and of those who have met an untimely end - wait to be given physical bodies. pray The destination to which you should pray depends on who you are: Humans pray Fornost Hobbits pray Shire Elves, Half-Elves pray GreyHavens Dwarves pray BlueMountains When you are more experienced and have acquired citizenship in other cities, it may be possible to pray to them as well (should you return here). Thieves might also wish to begin life as citizens of the Town of Tharbad. Other classes should not try this, at least not at a low level. Make sure you have read all the messages on this board before praying!
